Captain Horace Burrell crowned the day’s programme with the inaugural Karl Young lecture, in which he asked that the brilliant genius of Mr Young should be remembered. He pointed to Chad Young, CEO as carrying forward the vision of his father.
There was entertainment throughout the day including performances by Taurrus Rile, Dean Frazer, Droop Lion, Richie Spice, Prof I and the Nyabingi Drummers. Among those entertainers passing through were Popcaan, Richy Loop and Iba Mahr.

A Visonary & Business Man Serving The Community Of Ocho Rios.

Saw opportunities where others saw nothing and created one of St Ann’s best businesses
By: Tanya Chin
Born and raised on the sweet Vere plains in Clarendon, Wayne Boothe, is engaging, unconventional, smart, a riot, unassuming, but above all an astute business leader. Now at age 47 Wayne Boothe has accomplished his number one goal, which was to develop a continuing business, whose service will always be needed.

A proud graduate of the Vere Technical High School, Boothe was wired from birth to be an entrepreneur. He recalled that whilst he was in school he had his cow and goat raising business and sold them for the fun of commerce in the summer. Directly after graduating from high school he started his career as a mechanical engineer at Jamaica Aluminum Company, JAMALCO, in 1985. Even then, the same entrepreneurial spirit, he had in high school raged, however, this time it was a taxi and trucking business.
A fully fledge entrepreneur for the past 12 years, Boothe started out with his first service station in the heart of Ocho Rios, Boothe’s Esso. Six years ago he made his way out of the hum drum in Ocho Rios and unto the bypass to create a serve all full service Petcom station which is second to none. Amidst negative opinions of naysayers, Boothe was confident and remarked, “Let’s make it big, let’s make it spacious.”
He’s one of those people who see things that don’t exist and walk the path not travelled and create opportunities and wealth.
Today, Boothe’s Petcom is one of the most spacious, comfortable, top of the line service stations in St Ann, and busy as ever. The business caters for shoppers wanting supermarket items, food, confectionery, household articles, health and beauty products and almost anything g you want. As a service station, of course it has auto accessories and those everyday maintenance parts.
Not so long ago, he added a pharmacy too. The newest addition to the family, Delexis Pharmacy is a hit amongst customers, boasting competitive prices and the widest variety of prescription and over the counter medicines along with gift and stationery items.
VISION
What drove Boothe’s out of central Ocho Rios is in fact the allure of the business – no congestion, no hangers on, no vehicles turning the station into a bus and taxi terminus – just the ease and pleasure of going into a service station and getting out with everyday items or your vehicle ready. On top of that he insists on service.
He’s forever tweaking the business, adding more items, ensuring service delivery and meeting customers.
When many could not see a large profitable business outside of the hum drum of central Ocho Rios, Wayne Boothe saw the possibilities and away from the beaten track, started from scratch up the road from IRIE, another ground breaker.
Boothe’s greatest achievement is tied to his business. “To be able to employ over 60 persons and see their lives change for the better,” he said is immeasurable joy. He feels proudest when persons visit the pharmacy in their sickest of times at midnight and receive medication to make them better. All entities within the service station operate on a 24-hour basis.
Happily married for the last 20 years, technology has helped Boothe to balance his family and business life. He noted that everyone is just a phone call way. In addition, he praised his staff, stating that they always support him every step of the way and they are there not because it’s just a job, but also they feel a need to be there.
A committed Christian Boothe attends the Sangster Methodist church, his favourite scripture which links directly with his favourite quote is “Let us make man in our own imagine.” He explained that man shares so much with the spirit but more so knowledge and intelligence and that is what links man to his spiritual side.
His advice for budding entrepreneurs is for them to know the business they are going in, he remarked that, “You can’t be over qualified but you can be under qualified. Try to be as qualified as possible.”

A Perfect Example Of A Dedicated Mother, Visionary & Educator Awarded For Fifty Years Of Service To The Community Of Ocho Rios.

Adina Senior — Outstanding Educator

Adina Senior is a name that’s synonymous withearly childhood education. The dynamic educator and founder of the Buckfield Basic School in Ocho Rios is often spoken of for her significant service to education, especially in St Ann.
Mrs Senior has a passion for educating “babies” and even at age 86, she still feels that had it not been for her dim eyes she would still be in the classroom. “Had it not been for my eyes, I would have been doing it still,” she said.
Her journey as an educator started when, at the age of nine, she went to live with a Salvation Army officer who would travel all over the island teaching and taking on other duties in the institution.
Adina Senior was born in Lodge, St Ann, where she was grown until nine years old by her grandmother. She was then taken under the wings of the Salvation Army officer who helped to shape her future as an educator.
STARTING SCHOOL
When Mrs Senior was 20 years old, her guardian retired and it was then that she returned to her home parish to live. In 1950 she got married to Clarence Senior.
She worked different jobs but after she had her first two children, she decided she would go home and take care of them. With early childhood institutions not very prevalent, she started out teaching her two children along with nine other children at her home. It was then that her school started with 11 students. What was known for years as “Ms Senior’s School”, and is still referred to as such, now stands as the Buckfield Basic School.
With patience and love for children Mrs Senior, who became known as ‘Mama’ was a very effective early childhood educator.
Many of her past students have gone on to hold prestigious positions in society. One of Mrs Senior’s first students is former Commissioner of Police, and now CEO of the JUTC Hardly Lewin who, like many others, has expressed his gratitude for her confidence in him.
Teaching did not cause the humble educator to neglect the needs of her eight children. They too were her students and according to her, “everyone was under the same manners.”
The dedicated mother, wife and teacher was also a dedicated Christian woman and remains faithful to God today. Mrs Senior served for 12 years as a pastor in several branches of the Church of God of Prophesy.
MUSIC
She gave up her active role in the church about three years ago as her eye sight dwindles. However, she still attends church regularly and loves to listen to the preaching and singing.
Mrs Senior played several instruments including the keyboard and the harmonica. All her children are also musicians as she took time out to teach them.
Her dedication to education also seems to have rubbed off on her children, four of whom are trained educators. However, all her children have experienced the classroom as, after high school, they each taught at the basic school.
When asked what her advice is to young people who are considering going into the classroom she says “You can’t rough and beat things into babies; you have to friend them, love them and let them get to love you and they will learn. If you are going to beat them and rough them you are not going to get it.”
Over the years Mrs Senior has received numerous awards for her contribution to education. The Ocho Rios Police Youth Club, the Buckfield Basic PTA and her church are among the many that have recognized her over the years. She is the St Ann Chamber of Commerce awardee for education for 2012.
