The courtyard of the IRIE FM (Grover Broadcasting Company) at Coconut Grove St Ann was brimming with activity, all about the celebration of the entrepreneurial genius of the founder of IRIE radio Karl Young, who died two years ago.
Karl Young
The celebration of the life of Mr Young took many forms including bringing the public into the courtyard from where the two radio stations he founded, ZIP and IRIE, had live broadcasts. The company also streamed the broadcasts live on the internet.
The popular Sunday morning programme Running African was extended through to near midday with Andrea Williams anchoring with a team, roving with microphones .The grounds were also set up with several booths, representing nearly a dozen businesses that Mr Young operated , from entertainment through restaurant and bakery to music studio and hotel.
Captain Horace Burrell crowned the day’s programme with the inaugural Karl Young lecture, in which he asked that the brilliant genius of Mr Young should be remembered. He pointed to Chad Young, CEO as carrying forward the vision of his father.
There was entertainment throughout the day including performances by Taurrus Rile, Dean Frazer, Droop Lion, Richie Spice, Prof I and the Nyabingi Drummers. Among those entertainers passing through were Popcaan, Richy Loop and Iba Mahr.

A Visonary & Business Man Serving The Community Of Ocho Rios.

Saw opportunities where others saw nothing and created one of St Ann’s best businesses
By: Tanya Chin
Born and raised on the sweet Vere plains in Clarendon, Wayne Boothe, is engaging, unconventional, smart, a riot, unassuming, but above all an astute business leader. Now at age 47 Wayne Boothe has accomplished his number one goal, which was to develop a continuing business, whose service will always be needed.

A proud graduate of the Vere Technical High School, Boothe was wired from birth to be an entrepreneur. He recalled that whilst he was in school he had his cow and goat raising business and sold them for the fun of commerce in the summer. Directly after graduating from high school he started his career as a mechanical engineer at Jamaica Aluminum Company, JAMALCO, in 1985. Even then, the same entrepreneurial spirit, he had in high school raged, however, this time it was a taxi and trucking business.
A fully fledge entrepreneur for the past 12 years, Boothe started out with his first service station in the heart of Ocho Rios, Boothe’s Esso. Six years ago he made his way out of the hum drum in Ocho Rios and unto the bypass to create a serve all full service Petcom station which is second to none. Amidst negative opinions of naysayers, Boothe was confident and remarked, “Let’s make it big, let’s make it spacious.”
He’s one of those people who see things that don’t exist and walk the path not travelled and create opportunities and wealth.
Today, Boothe’s Petcom is one of the most spacious, comfortable, top of the line service stations in St Ann, and busy as ever. The business caters for shoppers wanting supermarket items, food, confectionery, household articles, health and beauty products and almost anything g you want. As a service station, of course it has auto accessories and those everyday maintenance parts.
Not so long ago, he added a pharmacy too. The newest addition to the family, Delexis Pharmacy is a hit amongst customers, boasting competitive prices and the widest variety of prescription and over the counter medicines along with gift and stationery items.
VISION
What drove Boothe’s out of central Ocho Rios is in fact the allure of the business – no congestion, no hangers on, no vehicles turning the station into a bus and taxi terminus – just the ease and pleasure of going into a service station and getting out with everyday items or your vehicle ready. On top of that he insists on service.
He’s forever tweaking the business, adding more items, ensuring service delivery and meeting customers.
When many could not see a large profitable business outside of the hum drum of central Ocho Rios, Wayne Boothe saw the possibilities and away from the beaten track, started from scratch up the road from IRIE, another ground breaker.
Boothe’s greatest achievement is tied to his business. “To be able to employ over 60 persons and see their lives change for the better,” he said is immeasurable joy. He feels proudest when persons visit the pharmacy in their sickest of times at midnight and receive medication to make them better. All entities within the service station operate on a 24-hour basis.
Happily married for the last 20 years, technology has helped Boothe to balance his family and business life. He noted that everyone is just a phone call way. In addition, he praised his staff, stating that they always support him every step of the way and they are there not because it’s just a job, but also they feel a need to be there.
A committed Christian Boothe attends the Sangster Methodist church, his favourite scripture which links directly with his favourite quote is “Let us make man in our own imagine.” He explained that man shares so much with the spirit but more so knowledge and intelligence and that is what links man to his spiritual side.
His advice for budding entrepreneurs is for them to know the business they are going in, he remarked that, “You can’t be over qualified but you can be under qualified. Try to be as qualified as possible.”

A Perfect Example Of A Dedicated Mother, Visionary & Educator Awarded For Fifty Years Of Service To The Community Of Ocho Rios.

Adina Senior — Outstanding Educator

Renae Dixon
Adina Senior is a name that’s synonymous withearly childhood education. The dynamic educator and founder of the Buckfield Basic School in Ocho Rios is often spoken of for her significant service to education, especially in St Ann.
Mrs Senior has a passion for educating “babies” and even at age 86, she still feels that had it not been for her dim eyes she would still be in the classroom. “Had it not been for my eyes, I would have been doing it still,” she said.
Her journey as an educator started when, at the age of nine, she went to live with a Salvation Army officer who would travel all over the island teaching and taking on other duties in the institution.
Adina Senior was born in Lodge, St Ann, where she was grown until nine years old by her grandmother. She was then taken under the wings of the Salvation Army officer who helped to shape her future as an educator.
STARTING SCHOOL
When Mrs Senior was 20 years old, her guardian retired and it was then that she returned to her home parish to live. In 1950 she got married to Clarence Senior.
She worked different jobs but after she had her first two children, she decided she would go home and take care of them. With early childhood institutions not very prevalent, she started out teaching her two children along with nine other children at her home. It was then that her school started with 11 students. What was known for years as “Ms Senior’s School”, and is still referred to as such, now stands as the Buckfield Basic School.
With patience and love for children Mrs Senior, who became known as ‘Mama’ was a very effective early childhood educator.
Many of her past students have gone on to hold prestigious positions in society. One of Mrs Senior’s first students is former Commissioner of Police, and now CEO of the JUTC Hardly Lewin who, like many others, has expressed his gratitude for her confidence in him.
Teaching did not cause the humble educator to neglect the needs of her eight children. They too were her students and according to her, “everyone was under the same manners.”
The dedicated mother, wife and teacher was also a dedicated Christian woman and remains faithful to God today. Mrs Senior served for 12 years as a pastor in several branches of the Church of God of Prophesy.
MUSIC
She gave up her active role in the church about three years ago as her eye sight dwindles. However, she still attends church regularly and loves to listen to the preaching and singing.
Mrs Senior played several instruments including the keyboard and the harmonica. All her children are also musicians as she took time out to teach them.
Her dedication to education also seems to have rubbed off on her children, four of whom are trained educators. However, all her children have experienced the classroom as, after high school, they each taught at the basic school.
When asked what her advice is to young people who are considering going into the classroom she says “You can’t rough and beat things into babies; you have to friend them, love them and let them get to love you and they will learn. If you are going to beat them and rough them you are not going to get it.”
Over the years Mrs Senior has received numerous awards for her contribution to education. The Ocho Rios Police Youth Club, the Buckfield Basic PTA and her church are among the many that have recognized her over the years. She is the St Ann Chamber of Commerce awardee for education for 2012.

The Rippling Effects Of Immigration For Ocho Rios And Its Residents

Ocho Rios community like many other communities with great potential have been disrupted by various immigration opportunities granted to their citizens. These opportunities have no doubt helped many families while destroying many others.

Very often we find that families are ripped apart after one member of a marriage union had been granted a visa to a foreign country. This has also happen to dismantled other relationships which we refer to as Common Law wife & husband. Siblings have also been affected dramatically after not seeing or hearing from each other for many years or a lifetime.

Immigrants who have left their countries in search of a better life sometime do, but there are others who have found a bitter life instead. The culture shock and other adjustments have shattered many hopes and expectations. Their hopes for a better life have crumbled. Some have been able to bounce back after awhile, while others have been swallowed up by series of failures.

On an overall basis, being able to migrate is not a bad thing or opportunity, rather it is how the opportunity is often miss-handled by those who have been given the opportunity and also the strategies put in place by these countries to capture the full attention and aspirations of their potential immigrants.

These psychological and economical strategies which have been put in place by the more advanced and developed countries are properly tailored for economic success in their country. Many countries have benefited greatly from immigration. True it is that both countries and immigrants have benefited in one way or another. Though this may be factual, a more rounded scrutiny will reveal that the down side of international immigration has had crippling effects on many other countries. These countries which have become victims suffers as their social structure and economical potential disappears when their human resource gets ripped away. As a result of this many victims have been created directly and indirectly within the immigration communities.

Quite often there are immigrants who would love to return to their loved ones, but because of finical restrains or concurring activities makes it seemingly impossible to return home even for a short while. Some have been able to return, but just with enough time to hug, shake hands, eat a few meals, a swim in the ocean and off again. No real quality time is spent to reconnect with their loved ones at home or their former communities and so this has caused a serious family break down in communities across the world within many nations. There are extreme cases in which family members have become ill and died as a result without the knowledge of their families or relatives living abroad. Other extreme cases such as travelers over-staying their time with the hope of gaining leagal residency. During these lengthy periods, parent, children, siblings and other families or relatives may become ill or even die and these persons are unable to render assistance or attend funerals because once they leave the country trying to return would only prove futile.

There are some other serious rippling effects from migration which has left many communities like our beloved Ocho Rios with broken families and disconnected communities. Even returning residents and natives visiting often feel like total strangers whenever they return home. Houses, lands, vehicles and many other personal and family properties have been left abundant, only to be vandalized or suffer depreciation over time. Houses left unattended are often occupied by intruders, lands left undeveloped due to the absence of owners then taken over by squatters. In many cases there are even worst scenarios where the older heads or grandparents and relatives are left to suffer or fend for themselves.

Lots of Natives on returning home after many years, experience a state of shock and bewilderment from the physical and emotional state of their families and relatives, leaving them with feelings of total remorse. Many are much too involved or busy in their current life abroad to be concerned or burdened with trying to resolve family issues in their home countries.  Some return to wherever it is that they now call home with a sense of guilt while others just snap into denial and never return to their country of origin or to render any assistance to their families and relatives who are in need.

Ocho Rios Home Coming (International) Group seeks desperately to assist in resolving some of these problems by first reconnecting its residents via Facebook, the internationally established and popular social internet media and through other social network medias that are available. O.R.H.C.Intl will definitely be establishing its own internet web-base where all its activities and affairs will be monitored. The group is also fucussed on reaching out to other residents who are not internet savvy or cannot be contacted via the internet. The radio waves and other news medias will be instrumental in accomplishing that task along with one-on-one verbal exchanges.

We hope that after reading these issues that this blog have cited, residents will see the need to assist by volunteering their services. Please help by contributing a small fraction of your time and professional skills such as, secretarial, project management & event coordination, public relations, marketing and research skills, networking and other skills that are required as this movement progresses. In doing so you'll be making a positive difference to correcting and modifying these trends that are socially, culturally, psychologically and economically harmful both to us, our offsprings, communities, country and the world at large.

Ocho Rios Home Coming Assessment & Mission Statement

Greetings to all current and former residents of Ocho Rios. The Ocho Rios Home Coming Group has been launched via Facebook in the month of March. Since its launching date the group has grown to over 2,000 members in its first month. The group is averaging a growing rate of 500 members per week. This is indeed very remarkable, which shows the effective response and appreciation of the people for a group of this magnitude.

To date it as proven to be an electrifying group as a result of the daily interaction and feed back from its members. As the current administrator of the group I have gotten so very remarkable compliments from various members for launching a well needed and long overdue group with a positive mission and common objectives.

The intended mission is to reconnect and reunite all the present residents and all the former residents that have migrated to various places within the Island and countries all over the world. The governing body which we're currently in the process of electing will be responsible for planning and orchestrating an annual convention. This Convention will allow members to attend and share in literal reunification exercises, fun and laughter while being entertained in a culturally entertaining atmosphere in the town of Ocho Rios. At the offset of this convention there will be an established 'Community Development Project Committee' that will be responsible to organize projects that members of the group can be engaged in to impact both the people of Ocho Rios and surrounding communities in different sectors and areas, such as the Schools, Hospital & Clinic, Recreational Park, Town Square and a lot more including interests in the surrounding communities as well.

Currently the members are already having a ball (fun) making virtual re-connections and bonding with old and lost families, friends, playmates, schoolmates, workmates, church-mates and other social groups that they were engaged in before becoming separated.

This is an outreach also to all visitors and lovers of Ocho Rios and Jamaica at large. We look forward to all for support in order to enable and energize this vision. Here are the links you'll need to become a member or a subscriber to the Community page and keep up with our group's activities also the Ocho Rios, surrounding communities and the Island of Jamaica in general. We look forward to your well needed and will be appreciated support. The links to the Group and Community page information are stated below.
